james 3:1 Dear brothers and sisters,[a] not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.



if we could all control our tongues then we would be perfect in every other way because the mouth is what gets you in trouble the most. we are supposed to watch what we say but most times we dont. we need to think before we speak because we often times we hurt peoples feelings when we say things we dont think about and we can never take it back. if only everyone would keep their mouth shut unlesss they have spmething wise to say, this world would be a much better place. always remember to think before you speak!

3When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

our tongues can control the rest of our body. the tongue can either be used for good or for evil. we can use our tongue to boast and be mean to people or we can use our tongue to uplift peopl e and preach the gospel. God gave us a tongue for a reason. use it for a good reason!!!





James 3 warns us to be careful what we teach because we will be judged by what we teach. We need to teach the right, not the wrong.

James 3:9-10 says,"Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. 10 And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth." In this scripture James is telling us that some people will go around teaching

Hebrews 12

Hebrews 12 explains the the God's discipline proves his love.
Hebrews 12:5-6 says, “My child, don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you.6 For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.” This scripture stuck out to me because everyone is always complaining about their parents' discipline against them. Well in this scripture it tells us that God disciplines the ones he loves. To me this means that if God didn't truely love us, he wouldn't discipline us. When God disciplines, he wants us to learn right from wrong.

This passage tells us that if God corrects us then obviously he loves us because he corrects those that he loves. God wants us to learn from our mistakes and never make them again, this can only be done if we are disciplined.

12 So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees. 13 Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame will not fall but become strong.

This scripture is very encouraging to me. we need to set a goal and work until we achieve that goal. if we rely on the Lord and endure through the end then we will get stronger in the Lord. God will never give us more than we can handle but he wants to challenge us so that we will draw nigh unto him.

"What a Christian Looks Like"

-Paul tells Titus to teach them self-control and patience so they'll make wise choices and earn the respect that younger people give them. And since others look up to them, they of all people need to understand the Christian faith.

-They shouldn't bad-mouth people or drink too much. And they should become mentors, teaching young women how to be good wives and mothers.

-They should learn from Titus's example of what it means to be kind and helpful toward others.

-They should try their best to please their masters.

Colossians! Pioneer Day!!!! =)

Colossians 3 tells us that as Christians we should live heavenly lives. God can't stand when we live our lives in sin. He can't stand when we go around and and sleep with anyone we can find. God wants his children to know that HE is the only thing that matters. Not who you're with or what you want to do. What matter is God!!! What matters is the fact that God loves everyone more than any of us could ever possibly imagine! God wants us to speak words to other people that we would speak to him. Love God! He loves you!!!

Paul relates Christianity to running a race. people believe that they have arrived but paul believes otherwise. he says that you are never completely perfect so therefore t=you have not arrived yet. Instead of wanting to earn a crown of celery, he chooses to strive to win the prize of eternal life. paul tells us to never give up because you have not arrived at the goal yet. the goal is heaven and we need to keep running until we get there.

2) Herod surnamed "Antipas", was the son of Herod the Great and Malthace, a Samaritan woman. After the death of his father he was appointed by the Romans tetrarch of Galilee and Peraea. His first wife was the daughter of Aretas, king of Arabia; but he subsequently repudiated her and took to himself Herodias, the wife of his brother Herod Philip; and in consequence Aretas, his father-in-law, made war against him and conquered him. He cast John the Baptist into prison because John had rebuked him for this unlawful connection; and afterwards, at the instigation of Herodias, he ordered him to be beheaded. Induced by her, too, he went to Rome to obtain from the emperor the title of king. But in consequence of the accusations brought against him by Herod Agrippa I, Caligula banished him (A.D. 39) to Lugdunum in Gaul, where he seems to have died. -victim carries crossbeam to execution site , crossbeam is attached to vertical pole, seat prolongs the torture making it easier to breathe

Describe the “nailed” phase.
- iron nails pin wrists and feet to cross, nails miss main arteries and bones, wine laced with pain killing myrrh or frankinscense is offered, Jesus refuses

Describe the “breath of life” phase.
- position and weight of body forces victim to push up to exhale, breaking legs speeds death, it forces arms to do all the work pulling victim up to exhale. jesus dies before breaking the legs becomes necessary

Describe the “speared” phase.
- soldier confirms death by stabbbing the heart. by this time, shock has started seperating blood into two basic elements. "water" pours out of jesus' chest-serum from inside adn around the heart. possible cause of death: a combination of shock, exhaustion, asphyxation, and heart failure


danielle: the whole thing stuck out to me. just going through the details of Jesus' crucifixion makes me cringe because i know that he did that for everyone, including me! it is sad to see that anyone had to go through that and it shows how much God truly loves us. so much so that he sent his son to die for our sins so that we may go to heaven and live with him forever!

kelli: The whole thing stuck out to me also. The fact that Jesus went through all of that suffering just for us, is so amazing. He never once backed down. Never once stopped. He was beaten to death for everyone! He was offered frankincense and he refused it! He went through all of that because he loves each and every one of us. He died for us! His blood was shed to save us from our sins so that we can see him again in Heaven! :)

Mark Book Assignment #1

a. Why is Mark considered a book for “readers with short attention spans”?
-it's the shortest of the 4 gospels...light on talk, heavy on action
b. What does Mark open up with (rather than a family tree or the birth of Jesus)?
-he jumps feet first into the Jordan River where John the Baptist is baptising people
c. What does Mark 1:7-8 say?
-"someone is coming soon who is greater than I am- so much greater that I'm not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and untie the straps of his sandles. I Baptize you with water, but he will Baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
d. “Then Jesus took off to work”…doing what?
-rounding up disciples, healing hundreds, feeling thousands, freeing the tongues of the speechless,tying the tongues of snooty scholars, calming storms, walking on water, dying, adn coming back to life.

i. When was our president sworn into office?

ii. Tell me about our presidents parents and background
-With a father from Kenya and a mother from Kansas, President Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. He was raised with help from his grandfather, who served in Patton's army, and his grandmother, who worked her way up from the secretarial pool to middle management at a bank.

After working his way through college with the help of scholarships and student loans, President Obama moved to Chicago, where he worked with a group of churches to help rebuild communities devastated by the closure of local steel plants.

He went on to attend law school, where he became the first African—American president of the Harvard Law Review. Upon graduation, he returned to Chicago to help lead a voter registration drive, teach constitutional law at the University of Chicago, and remain active in his community.

President Obama's years of public service are based around his unwavering belief in the ability to unite people around a politics of purpose. In the Illinois State Senate, he passed the first major ethics reform in 25 years, cut taxes for working families, and expanded health care for children and their parents. As a United States Senator, he reached across the aisle to pass groundbreaking lobbying reform, lock up the world's most dangerous weapons, and bring transparency to government by putting federal spending online.

-The Robinsons lived in a brick bungalow on the South Side of Chicago. Fraser was a pump operator for the Chicago Water Department, and despite being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at a young age, he hardly ever missed a day of work. Marian stayed home to raise Michelle and her brother, Craig, skillfully managing a busy household filled with love, laughter, and important life lessons.

A product of Chicago public schools, Michelle studied sociology and African-American studies at Princeton University. After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1988, she joined the Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin, where she later met the man who would become the love of her life.

After a few years, Michelle decided her true calling lay in encouraging people to serve their communities and their neighbors. She served as assistant commissioner of planning and development in Chicago's City Hall before becoming the founding executive director of the Chicago chapter of Public Allies, an AmeriCorps program that prepares youth for public service.

In 1996, Michelle joined the University of Chicago with a vision of bringing campus and community together. As associate dean of student services, she developed the university's first community service program, and under her leadership as vice president of community and external affairs for the University of Chicago Medical Center, volunteerism skyrocketed.

As First Lady, Michelle Obama looks forward to continuing her work on the issues close to her heart — supporting military families, helping working women balance career and family, and encouraging national service.

Michelle and Barack Obama have two daughters: Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7. Like their mother, the girls were born on the South Side of Chicago.

-Supriya

iii. Tell me about his wife, Supriya
-Supriya Jindal became First Lady of Louisiana when her husband, then Congressman Bobby Jindal was sworn in as Governor of Louisiana on January 14, 2008. Mrs. Jindal currently serves as the youngest first lady in the nation and is the only First Spouse in the country that holds a degree in engineering.As a mother of three young children, Supriya has taken an interest in issues regarding children’s education, and enjoys encouraging children to build a strong foundation in math and science - no matter what path they hope to pursue in life. In addition to visiting classrooms and participating in hands-on science experiments with students, Mrs. Jindal has established a non-profit foundation, “The Supriya Jindal Foundation for Louisiana’s Children” that is working to modernize Louisiana classrooms by bringing interactive technology into as many Louisiana classrooms as possible.

1.)Psalm 68:6 (Whole Chapter)
God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.

danielle: God will put people in another persons life that has no "family". God never leaves someone to be completely lonely for their whole life. he sends someone to be their friend and to help them. God also saves people that are in bondage but those that choose to be rebellious will just be miserable in their sin eventually.

2.)Titus 1:11 (Whole Chapter)
They must be silenced, because they are turning whole families away from the truth by their false teaching. And they do it only for money.
danielle: i believe this istalking about some pastors. nowadays, some churches are all into getting more money instead of focusing on God. if the pastor is preaching falsely, then he will bring his whole church body down with him.

3.)Genesis 18:19
For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.”

danielle: the Lord puts fathers ahead of their children to command them and raise them in the way of the Lord.

And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

danielle: fathers should choose for him and his family to serve the Lord and if your parents aren't Christians than we should choose on our own to serve the Lord.

5.)Colossians 3:18-21
Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.

danielle: these are pretty much what families should live for. God gives these specific orders to the parents and children.
